Getting an SDS for your product
Need a new document, or trying to locate an existing one?
For a product you manufacture, import or sell under your own formulation, collect its exact identity, composition information and available supplier SDSs, then request qualified product-specific authoring. If you purchased an unchanged chemical, ask the manufacturer or supplier for its current SDS first. See our US preparation guide.
A knowledgeable, qualified author can prepare the document using defensible product information. A third-party authoring service may help, but the responsible manufacturer or importer must still meet its applicable Hazard Communication obligations. Read the authoring process.
Not automatically. A supplier SDS describes that specific raw material or supplier product; a formulated finished product can have different concentrations, physical properties and hazard classifications. Check the finished-product identity and hazards before reusing a file.
Start with the finished product name, intended use, manufacturer/importer details, composition or available ingredient data, supplier SDSs, physical properties and the request you received. Share confidential formulations through an agreed secure channel, not in a public contact form.
No. An SDS is a hazard-communication document, not a certificate issued or approved by OSHA. A professionally prepared SDS can support a compliance process, but it does not guarantee regulatory or marketplace acceptance.
Check the actual manufacturer or brand website, ask the supplier for the current SDS and confirm the product identifier and revision date. For an unchanged purchased product, obtaining the existing sheet is usually the first step. If you make or relabel a different formula, review whether a new document is needed.
Ask in writing for a sheet matching the exact product and intended US market. For hazardous chemicals supplied to US workplaces, manufacturers and importers have SDS duties under OSHA’s Hazard Communication rule; keep the request record and seek qualified regulatory help if the supplier cannot provide accurate information.
Possibly, but do not assume the foreign SDS meets US rules. The importer should confirm the 16-section format, English language, US classifications and responsible-party details. See OSHA’s guidance for importers.
Ingredient SDSs are useful inputs, but they do not describe the exact finished mixture by themselves. A qualified author normally needs the full ingredient identities, concentration data or defensible ranges, product use, physical properties and supporting test information.
A responsible author needs sufficient confidential composition information to classify the mixture safely. OSHA provides specific trade-secret provisions for certain Section 3 disclosures; simply replacing every ingredient with “proprietary” is not a universal shortcut. See OSHA Appendix D.
Start with the exact finished product and how it will be sold or used. US importers of hazardous workplace chemicals have specific responsibilities; marketplaces and carriers can also request documentation. A Chinese-language or supplier-only sheet may need a US compliance review.
A Certificate of Analysis can support composition or specifications, but it does not substitute for hazard classification data. The author should review the COA together with raw-material SDSs, formulation details, physical properties and any needed testing.
Share the exact product name, company and brand, product category, intended US market, current product label, ingredients or supplier sheets, and any rejection notice. Avoid sending confidential formulas through an open enquiry form; first describe what records are available. See the authoring checklist.
Amazon FBA and marketplace documents
Start with the exact Amazon request and the specific product.
No blanket requirement applies to every FBA listing. Amazon may request an SDS or exemption sheet during dangerous-goods classification, even for products that turn out not to be regulated as dangerous goods. Read the Amazon FBA SDS checklist.
Use the dangerous-goods classification workflow for the affected product; Amazon directs sellers to “Manage dangerous goods classification” and “Upload document.” Check the current Seller Central interface and instructions for your account. See the submission steps.
Common document issues to investigate include a product-name mismatch, conflicting or missing information, or an unsuitable SDS for the listed formulation. Compare the rejection notice, product identifier and the submitted PDF before requesting corrections. Use the troubleshooting checklist.
A similar product’s SDS is not reliable evidence that your exact finished product has the same hazards. Match the product name, manufacturer, formulation and supporting data; do not substitute another brand’s document to satisfy a request.
No. Amazon can review the SDS alongside category, classification, dangerous-goods and listing information. An accurate SDS does not override restricted-product rules or guarantee approval.
Amazon expects the SDS product name to match the product title on the detail page and the manufacturer or brand details to match as well. Confirm the listing and document represent the same formulation; a renamed SKU may need a documented identity update. See Amazon’s SDS requirements.
Amazon US states that its submitted SDS must have been created or updated within the past five years. This is a marketplace submission rule, not a universal OSHA expiration date. Read Amazon’s current policy.
Amazon may accept an exemption sheet for qualifying products, but can request a complete SDS instead; products with chemical components and bundles may not qualify. Follow the exact ASIN request rather than submitting an exemption sheet automatically. Amazon document guidance.
For a bundle or kit containing multiple chemical-based products, Amazon states that sellers must provide an SDS for each product in the kit. A single sheet that describes only one component is not enough. See Amazon’s kit rule.
Amazon’s US guidance describes a target SDS review of two business days after upload, excluding public holidays. Actual cases may take longer or require further action. See Amazon’s dangerous goods documentation page.
Yes. Amazon checks the submitted documentation and product identity during dangerous-goods classification; a non-regulated final classification does not remove the need to respond to its request. Review the exact rejection reason and whether an SDS or exemption sheet is appropriate.
The answer depends on the actual formulations and how the ASINs are presented. Different compositions may require different hazard classifications; differences only in package size do not automatically require a different chemical SDS. The SDS must still match the listing.
Open the dangerous-goods classification request for the ASIN, check the reason, compare product title and brand, verify all 16 SDS sections and the document date, and review bundle contents. Upload corrected product-specific documents through Amazon’s classification workflow.
Only if it genuinely describes the finished product and is consistent with the actual seller-facing brand, product identity and formulation. If the supplier document describes a different brand or bulk ingredient, request a suitable document from the responsible manufacturer or a qualified reviewer.
An SDS contains hazard, composition, handling and transport information for a defined product. An exemption sheet is Amazon’s alternative declaration for eligible cases; it is not simply a one-page version of an SDS. Use the document Amazon requests for that product.
TikTok Shop US SDS requirements
For sellers responding to product-documentation checks.
TikTok Shop US may require a product-specific SDS for listings containing harmful or potentially hazardous chemicals and in its dangerous-goods workflow. Lithium battery products can require UN38.3 documentation. Review TikTok Shop SDS requirements.
In Seller Center, complete product details and any product compliance or dangerous-goods questionnaire. If the item is identified for documentation, upload the requested SDS or lithium battery test document and submit for review. Follow our seller checklist.
Check the platform notice first. TikTok identifies mismatched product documents, unsuitable format, language, outdated content and generic submissions among potential problems. An accurate correction may be needed; a new authoring request cannot guarantee listing approval. Review rejection reasons.
Potentially, if it accurately covers the exact product and meets the current document requirements of both marketplaces. Submit the version each platform requests; acceptance on one platform does not guarantee acceptance on the other.
Do not assume every fragrance is treated identically. Product formulation, hazard classification, marketplace category and the specific request matter. TikTok cites perfumes and essential oils among products that can raise dangerous-goods questions, and some products may be restricted or prohibited.
TikTok’s guidance warns against generic or self-made documents that do not have proper expertise and product evidence. It calls for the exact product SDS from its manufacturer or a qualified authoring service. TikTok’s SDS guide.
TikTok can still request an SDS to assess a chemical-containing product, even where no hazmat shipping label is required. The shipping classification and marketplace document request are separate questions. See TikTok’s SDS rules.
While adding or editing the product, complete the required compliance and hazardous-material attributes, then upload the requested SDS in the Product Certification/Documents area. Seller Center fields can change; follow TikTok’s listing guide.
Yes, TikTok’s guidance expects the SDS in the official language of the market where the product is listed. For US listings, use an accurate English SDS matching the product. TikTok SDS requirements.
TikTok requires a sheet for the exact formulation, SKU and packaging. Compare product name, brand, size, ingredient or hazard profile, and Seller Center attributes. Do not use an SDS for a similar competitor product. See its document checklist.
For lithium battery products, TikTok’s US guidance accepts a UN38.3 lithium battery test report instead of an SDS for the relevant requirement. Additional product and transport obligations can still apply. TikTok’s battery-document guidance.
TikTok may block or suppress the listing until the correct document is provided. Requirements depend on product category and hazard information, so read the actual notice and comply before relisting. Read the seller guidance.
Use the notice in Seller Center to identify the issue, correct the documentation or listing, and follow the available resubmission or appeal route. A valid SDS does not override prohibited-product or category restrictions. See TikTok’s rejection guidance.
TikTok expects the SDS to match the exact formulation and SKU. If fragrances differ in their hazardous constituents or classification, one generic sheet may be insufficient. Have a qualified author review whether grouping is defensible for your formulas.
TikTok’s September 2026 US dangerous-goods guidance describes a 90-day window for certain already listed products subsequently identified as dangerous goods to supply required SDS documentation. Do not assume this applies to a new listing or a prohibited product. Read the current policy.
Cost, timing and professional authoring
Understand the service scope before paying.
MSDS Bharat lists USD $99–$199 per defined product for standard English-language Professional Authoring, depending on product complexity. Document review, testing, translations and unusual scopes need confirmation. See the US cost guide.
Pricing can change with formulation complexity, number of ingredients or products, quality of available evidence, classification work and requested modifications. Clarify whether your quote is for one finished product, a review or multiple formulations.
The existing MSDS Bharat US service information lists a typical 24–48-hour turnaround once the required product information is available. Complex or incomplete submissions, testing and custom scope can take longer; confirm the schedule before ordering.
Do not assume so. SDS authoring, third-party testing, dangerous-goods classification and marketplace approval are different services. Ask which evidence and review activities the written quote actually includes.
A quoted authoring project is typically scoped to a specified formulation and document version. Future formula changes, additional markets, translations, testing or material reclassification may require additional work; confirm the service terms before ordering.
Not always. If the chemical formulation and hazards are identical, different package volumes may be described appropriately without separate chemical authoring, but transport or packaging details may still matter. Request a review of the actual SKU variations.
Yes, request a multi-product quote and provide a product matrix showing each formula and variant. A common brand does not mean all formulas can share one SDS; cost and documentation depend on what differs.
A template or generator cannot reliably classify a finished mixture without suitable source data and technical assessment. Marketplace reviews often flag product-identity, composition, hazard and date mismatches. Compare the offered authoring scope, not just the advertised price.
No. Authoring evaluates available product information and prepares a document; a lab measures properties or verifies results. Where data are missing, testing may be a separate requirement and charge.
Ask whether the quote covers a finished-product classification, all 16 sections, author review, revisions, target-market assessment, translations, marketplace feedback and any testing. Check turnaround assumptions and how formula confidentiality is protected.
OSHA Hazard Communication & SDS rules
US workplace requirements are different from marketplace review.
Under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, chemical manufacturers and importers generally must obtain or develop an SDS for each hazardous chemical they produce or import; workplace employers must maintain appropriate SDSs for hazardous chemicals they use. See 29 CFR 1910.1200.
OSHA’s HazCom SDS duties generally apply to chemicals classified as hazardous under the standard. A product outside that scope may still face customer, logistics or marketplace information requests. The result depends on actual product characteristics and applicable rules.
The format includes identification, hazards, composition, first aid, firefighting, spills, handling, exposure controls, physical properties, stability, toxicology, ecology, disposal, transport, regulations and other information. OSHA specifies headings and order and does not enforce the content requirements of Sections 12–15 under HazCom.
OSHA’s 2026 compliance-date extension sets November 19, 2027 for manufacturers, importers and distributors evaluating mixtures under the updated HCS. Substance deadlines differ. Check OSHA’s current schedule.
OSHA updated hazard-classification and communication provisions, including selected mixture and aerosol considerations. The scope and dates depend on the duty holder and chemical type; compare existing documents with OSHA’s extension notice and the updated standard.
OSHA extended HCS 2024 compliance dates by four months in January 2026. The initial substance deadline moved to May 19, 2026 and later dates moved accordingly. Verify the applicable substance, mixture and employer deadlines using OSHA’s official notice.
Yes, as long as required sheets are readily accessible to employees without barriers during work shifts; an emergency-access process is important. Electronic storage does not remove the duty to provide timely access. OSHA text on SDS access.
It depends on the hazard and nature of workplace use. The consumer-product exemption can apply when employee exposure is comparable in duration and frequency to normal consumer use; intensive occupational use may be different. See OSHA’s interpretation.
For covered hazardous chemicals, OSHA requires the responsible manufacturer or importer to provide the SDS in English, and additional languages may also be supplied. TikTok and other marketplaces have their own country-language requirements. See the SDS rule.
OSHA’s rule addresses provision of an appropriate SDS on initial shipment and the first shipment after an update for covered chemicals, with distributor responsibilities also applying. Ask the manufacturer for the current version. Regulatory SDS requirements.
The 16 standardized section headings include Section 14 for transport information; OSHA does not enforce the substantive information in Sections 12–15 under its workplace hazard rule because other agencies regulate these areas. Marketplace and transport requirements may still require accurate Section 14 information. OSHA HCS rule.
Yes. OSHA workplace coverage and marketplace documentation are different. Whether a cosmetic is within an OSHA exception depends on the facts; Amazon can request hazard documents for its own FBA classification. Review both the use conditions and the platform notice.
Product-specific SDS questions
Formulations and use conditions matter more than broad category labels.
Whether an OSHA SDS is required depends on the product’s hazards and applicable exemptions. Marketplaces or logistics partners may separately request one. A fragrance-supplier SDS does not automatically cover your finished perfume blend.
A room spray containing flammable or otherwise hazardous ingredients may trigger marketplace or shipping review. Requirements depend on the actual mixture, packaging and sales channel. Start with the exact marketplace request and finished-product data.
OSHA permits one SDS for certain complex mixtures with similar contents and hazards, but variant coverage must be substantiated. Do not assume different perfume oils, concentrations or product formats share a classification.
No. An SDS describes chemical hazards, handling and safety information; UN38.3 provides testing evidence for qualifying lithium battery transport scenarios. TikTok Shop may request battery-specific test documentation separately.
Some candles and fragrance inputs can prompt marketplace dangerous-goods questions. Whether an SDS is required depends on the composition, classification and platform request. A wax or fragrance oil supplier sheet alone may not describe the finished product.
Often the finished blends have different composition and hazards than neat essential oils. For a marketed mixture, use documentation covering that actual formula; do not submit a raw ingredient SDS as if it were the final product.
Nonflammability does not answer whether other hazards exist, such as skin or eye damage, sensitization or corrosivity. Check ingredients, pH, use and applicable rules before deciding whether an SDS is needed.
That depends on the formulation, hazards, workplace-use setting and any marketplace request. A contract manufacturer may already have an applicable SDS; review whether the label, responsible-party identity and finished-product data match.
Usually not without strong technical justification: the wax product and liquid spray differ in composition, physical form, exposure and potentially flammability. Evaluate each finished product separately.
Pressurized containers introduce aerosol hazard and packaging considerations. Determine the finished product hazard classification and transport status rather than copying an SDS for a non-aerosol fragrance.
Workplace hazardous chemical rules, additives, exposure scenarios and customer requests may make one necessary. A private-label lubricant SDS must accurately cover the marketed blend and any hazards, not a generic petroleum base oil.
Possibly for substantially similar mixtures with the same hazards and supportable composition ranges, but not automatically. OSHA has addressed acceptable grouping and rejects excessively broad percentage ranges. See OSHA’s interpretation of grouped products.
Shipping, UN numbers and transport documents
Hazard communication is not the same as dangerous-goods transportation.
No. An SDS communicates hazards; carrier acceptance and shipping compliance may also require correct classification, packaging, labeling, marking and transport documents. Start with the carrier’s specific request.
A UN number is a transport identifier for certain regulated dangerous goods. It must follow the product’s actual transport classification; a similar formula’s UN number should not be copied without assessment.
That may describe a transport-mode classification under specific facts, not a blanket exemption from all marketplace or workplace documentation. Check composition, shipping method, packaging and the carrier’s current rules.
It depends on the finished product’s flammability and other transport properties, concentration, packaging and applicable mode-specific rules. Do not assign or remove a UN number solely because a product is called perfume.
No. A shipping declaration is a transport document with its own regulatory requirements, while an SDS describes the product’s hazards and supporting information. The carrier may request both or other documents.
The core formulation data may be reusable, but country-specific regulations, languages and transport modes can change document needs. Check each destination and avoid assuming US OSHA alignment equals compliance everywhere.
Requirements depend on the platform and battery/product type. TikTok Shop’s US guidance accepts UN38.3 instead of SDS for specified lithium-battery submissions, while carriers and other customers may request additional documents. TikTok’s SDS guide.
Ingredients, CAS numbers and confidential formulas
What an SDS author needs to classify a specific finished mixture.
OSHA’s Section 3 requirements focus on qualifying hazardous ingredients and certain mixtures, not a blanket public inventory of every raw material. Accurate chemical identities or identifiers are still needed for technical classification. Appendix D.
Not as an automatic workaround. OSHA has specific requirements for claiming protected identities or concentrations while maintaining appropriate hazard communication. Have a qualified author apply those rules to the actual formula. OSHA trade-secret Q&A.
In defined situations OSHA allows ranges, including appropriate trade-secret claims, batch variability or substantially similar mixtures. The range must be defensible and not conceal an important hazard change. OSHA’s composition guidance.
No. A COA generally reports tested specifications or batch results; an SDS communicates hazards, safe handling, emergency measures and regulatory information. The author can use a COA as one supporting input.
A missing physical property should not be invented. The responsible author must evaluate whether reliable data can be sourced or whether testing is needed, particularly when flammability or transport classification depends on it.
OSHA permits certain concentration ranges for documented batch variability if the variations do not alter the overall hazard and the ranges are accurate. An implausibly broad range can be unacceptable. OSHA explanation.
Required label elements follow the applicable hazard classification. Do not add or omit pictograms merely to satisfy a marketplace check; verify the actual hazards and consistency between Section 2, labels and listing attributes.
Corrections, renewals and SDS validity
Understand what needs to change and why.
OSHA does not impose a universal five-year SDS expiration period. Significant new hazard or protection information can require an SDS update within three months. Marketplaces may have their own document-date rules.
Review the revision when ingredients, concentrations, physical properties, classification or relevant safety information change. The necessary update depends on whether the new information materially affects hazards or protection measures.
Read the exact reason and distinguish a date-specific marketplace rule from an inaccurate or out-of-date SDS. A cosmetic revision-date change without a real document review does not resolve substantive discrepancies.
A percentage change may alter flammability, sensitization, other hazard categories or required ingredient disclosures. Ask for a technical review of the revised finished formula; update or reauthor the sheet if the new version is no longer accurately represented.
The composition may remain unchanged, but Section 1 responsible-party details, identifiers and labels must be reviewed for consistency. A controlled administrative revision may be appropriate; do not overwrite the old document without version tracking.
Look for a preparation or revision date, consistent product identifier, responsible party, plausible Sections 2, 3, 9 and 14, and evidence that the actual formulation was assessed. A changed date alone does not establish a complete technical update.
It may be a starting reference, but the product data and hazard classifications need review against current applicable requirements and the 16-section SDS structure. Copying old wording into a new template is not enough.
