Why does the chemical class matter?
A resin, solvent, crosslinker and pigment dispersion have different hazard questions. The SDS must start with the actual product chemistry and supplied concentration rather than copying the final coating’s document.
What information is needed before preparation?
- Full composition or reliable concentration ranges.
- Supplier SDS files for ingredients and carriers.
- Product function in the coating formulation.
- Physical form, colour, odour, density, viscosity and pH where relevant.
- Reliable flash point and volatility data for solvent-containing products.
- Package size and whether the material is supplied as part of a kit.
- Technical data sheet and recommended storage conditions.

When ingredient-specific official guidance becomes relevant?
If the raw material contains isocyanates, the OSHA isocyanates overview identifies potential irritation and respiratory effects from relevant workplace exposure. Those warnings should appear only when the submitted crosslinker or coating chemical actually contains the applicable substances.
For epoxy-based raw materials, the NIOSH guidance on uncured epoxies and resins explains that some components can present hazards before curing and that suitable ventilation and protective equipment matter. A generic resin statement should not be copied to unrelated acrylic, silicone or water-based additives.
What should a coating chemical SDS contain?
The official OSHA Safety Data Sheet format specifies the recognised 16-section sequence.

Can the raw-material SDS be used for the finished coating?
No. The finished coating has its own composition and may dilute, combine or introduce different ingredients. Use the Paint MSDS guide for finished paints and the Ceramic Coating MSDS guide for finished products marketed in that category.
Similarly, a finished coating SDS should not be used as the document for a separately supplied hardener, catalyst or thinner.
