Quick answer

Natural origin does not determine the SDS conclusion. Powders, extracts, oils and finished herbal blends can have very different handling and hazard profiles.

Why does Botanical identity come first?

“Herbal product” may describe a dried powder, aqueous extract, hydroalcoholic extract, oil infusion, resin, cosmetic blend or traditional medicine. The SDS should state the botanical identity, plant part, extraction method, carrier and finished physical form.

The government’s e-Charak medicinal-plant platform supports information exchange around herbs and medicinal-plant raw materials. Commercial names alone are not enough to identify a botanical material reliably.

Which regulatory category applies?

The official CDSCO information on Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs shows that traditional medicines are regulated separately from ordinary cosmetics or food products. An SDS does not replace an AYUSH licence, product permission, food compliance or cosmetic registration.
