Ink MSDS Certificate

An ink SDS must cover the complete finished formulation—not only its pigment. Carrier, binder, curing method, colour variant and physical properties determine the hazard review.

Quick answer

An Ink MSDS Certificate should describe the finished printing ink, including its colourant, binder, carrier and curing system. Water-based, solvent-based, UV-curable, digital and offset inks can require different hazard and handling information, so a pigment SDS cannot replace the finished-product SDS.

What ink system is being supplied?

Printing ink is a finished mixture, not merely a pigment. Its SDS must account for the colourant, resin or binder, carrier, driers, photoinitiators, surfactants and other additives.

Ink systemMain SDS considerations
Water-based inkCo-solvents, amines, pH, preservatives and mist exposure.
Solvent-based inkSolvent identity, flash point, vapour controls and ignition sources.
UV-curable inkAcrylates, oligomers, photoinitiators and uncured skin exposure.
Screen-printing inkBinder, solvent or curing system and cleanup chemicals.
Digital or inkjet inkCarrier, humectants, colourants, fine mist and printer-use conditions.
Paste or offset inkHigh-viscosity binder system, mineral oils, driers and cleanup solvents.

What information should be submitted?

  • Complete formulation or concentration ranges.
  • Colourant identity and pigment or dye supplier SDS files.
  • Binder, resin, carrier solvent, humectant and additive details.
  • Water-based, solvent-based, UV-curable, oil-based or other technology.
  • Flash point, viscosity, density and pH where relevant.
  • Colour series and any ingredients that change between shades.
  • Package type, printing method and intended industrial use.

See the main MSDS Certificate in India pillar guide for the general workflow. A raw pigment should use the separate Dye and Pigment MSDS page.

Why solvent and printing method matter?

The NIOSH guidance for printing operations describes worker exposure to solvent vapours and other materials in printing environments. The NIOSH solvent-exposure guidance also identifies printing shops among workplaces where solvent exposure can occur.

These sources do not mean every ink is solvent-based. They show why the carrier system and actual workplace use must be known before writing handling and ventilation instructions.

Can a complete colour series use one SDS?

Sometimes. If the binder, carrier and hazards are essentially the same, a series may be covered together with a clearly stated shade range. A separate SDS may be needed when a colour introduces a different metal compound, sensitiser, solvent or other ingredient that changes classification.

What should the ink SDS contain?

The OSHA SDS format provides the 16-section structure.

SectionsInk-specific focus
1–3Printing method, colour series, carrier system, hazards and ingredients.
4–6Vapour, mist, splash or skin exposure and spill response.
7–8Ventilation, ignition control, gloves and cleanup procedures.
9–11Flash point, viscosity, pH, stability and toxicology.
12–15Environmental, disposal, transport and regulatory information.
16Revision and shade-scope information.

Does every solvent-based ink have the same UN number?

No. Flash point, solvent composition, viscosity, package and transport provisions must be reviewed for the finished product. A transport description should not be copied from a raw solvent SDS. Use DG/Non-DG Classification where a separate shipping conclusion is required.

How much does Ink MSDS Certificate cost?

Pricing depends on the number of distinct ink formulations or justified colour groups.

RequirementPrice
1 certificate₹3,999
2 certificates₹6,999
3 or more certificatesNegotiable

Usual delivery is 24–48 hours after complete details and payment. Colour testing, print-performance testing and separate transport documents are outside the fee unless included.

Which common ink SDS mistakes should you avoid?

  • Using a pigment SDS for the finished ink.
  • Calling every ink water-based or non-flammable without data.
  • Ignoring uncured UV-ink ingredients.
  • Using one SDS across chemically different shades.
  • Copying raw-solvent transport information.
  • Leaving cleanup and printing method unspecified.

Which official references support this guide?

These references support the general SDS structure and the product-specific points cited above. The finished document must still be based on the actual formulation, physical data and intended market.
