A Battery MSDS Certificate is the commonly searched term for a Safety Data Sheet covering a specific battery product. It identifies the battery or cell, manufacturer or supplier, chemistry, relevant internal materials, foreseeable hazards, emergency actions, handling, storage and available transport information.

Does every battery require an SDS?

Not in every jurisdiction or situation. The determination depends on the product, normal use, foreseeable emergencies and applicable exemptions.

In the United States, the OSHA interpretation on lithium-ion batteries and hazard communication explains that a manufacturer or importer may need an SDS when a lithium-ion cell or battery does not qualify for an article exemption and workers may be exposed to its physical or health hazards. This should not be converted into a blanket statement that every battery worldwide always needs an SDS.

How is battery transport information reviewed?

The UN Model Regulations for dangerous goods cover classification, packing, marking, labelling and documentation provisions, including battery entries. The correct transport description depends on chemistry and how the battery is presented for shipment.

For example, lithium-ion batteries shipped alone and lithium-ion batteries contained in equipment do not use the same transport description. Damaged, defective, prototype, waste or recalled batteries may face additional restrictions.

An SDS can present Section 14 information but does not replace shipper classification, packaging compliance, marks, labels or shipment documentation. Use DG/Non-DG Classification for separately scoped transport review.

Can one SDS cover damaged or used batteries?

The standard product SDS describes the battery as supplied. A swollen, leaking, damaged, defective, recalled or end-of-life battery can present conditions that are not represented by normal-use information.

Do not use an ordinary new-product SDS as the only basis for shipping or managing damaged batteries. The condition, chemistry, remaining charge and applicable waste or transport rules require separate consideration.
