What is a Lithium-Ion Battery MSDS Certificate?

It is a Safety Data Sheet prepared for a named lithium-ion cell or battery product. The OSHA SDS structure defines the recognised 16-section sequence. Whether an SDS is legally required can depend on jurisdiction and whether an article exemption applies.

The OSHA interpretation for lithium-ion batteries explains that a manufacturer or importer may need an SDS when a product does not qualify for the article exemption and workers can be exposed to physical or health hazards. This is not a blanket rule for every battery worldwide.

How is the SDS different from UN 38.3 documents?

The UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, subsection 38.3 contains the lithium-cell and battery test framework. PHMSA also provides an official lithium-battery test-summary resource. SDS preparation does not create missing laboratory evidence.

  • Manufacturer, model, cell or pack configuration and intended equipment.
  • Nominal voltage, capacity and watt-hour rating.
  • Electrolyte and other relevant internal constituents.
  • Enclosure, terminals, battery-management and protective features.
  • UN 38.3 report and test summary where applicable.
  • Shipping configuration: alone, packed with equipment or contained in equipment.

What hazards should the SDS address?

The document may cover released electrolyte, thermal decomposition, short circuit, fire, rupture and exposure to internal materials after damage. Normal-use and damaged-battery conditions should not be confused.

A standard product SDS should not claim that ordinary handling exposes users to every internal ingredient. It should explain foreseeable conditions and emergency response using evidence for the design.

What is the difference between UN 3480 and UN 3481?

The PHMSA Lithium Battery Guide for Shippers separates scenarios by battery type, size and configuration. Lithium-ion batteries shipped by themselves use UN 3480 where applicable, while batteries packed with or contained in equipment use UN 3481. Packaging, quantity, marking and air restrictions can differ.

Section 14 of an SDS is not a complete shipment decision. Use the DG/Non-DG Classification service and the UN 38.3 support page for separately scoped needs.

What about damaged, swollen or recalled batteries?

They require separate assessment. The normal SDS describes the product as supplied, while a leaking, swollen, thermally damaged or defective battery may have additional handling and transport restrictions.
