Which construction product is being documented?

“Construction chemical” is a business category, not one chemical identity. Cement admixtures, repair mortars, waterproofing liquids, grouts, sealants, floor coatings and resin systems can have completely different compositions and exposure routes. The SDS must therefore identify the exact product, component and physical form rather than describe construction materials in general.

What information should be submitted?

  • Full formulation or composition ranges for the supplied product.
  • Supplier SDS files for resins, hardeners, solvents, additives and fillers.
  • Technical data sheet, label and intended application.
  • Physical form, colour, odour, pH and density where relevant.
  • Reliable flash point, viscosity or other critical test data where applicable.
  • Package type, pack size and whether the product is supplied as one or two components.
  • Existing transport information or customer requirement, if any.

Why construction chemistry changes the hazard review?

The NIOSH guidance on epoxies and resins notes that uncured systems can contain different reactive ingredients and that exposure may occur before curing. This is why an epoxy resin, its amine hardener and the cured floor cannot be described by one generic paragraph.

For polyurethane products, the OSHA overview of isocyanate hazards identifies potential skin, mucous-membrane and respiratory effects. The SDS should only include those concerns when the supplied formulation actually contains relevant isocyanates or related ingredients.

Cementitious powders may also require a dust-focused review, while solvent-containing coatings may require flammability and vapour controls. No hazard should be copied merely because the product is used on a construction site.

Can a two-part kit use one SDS?

Not as a default. A resin and a hardener remain separate chemical products before mixing and may have different classifications, first-aid measures, PPE and spill responses. Each component should normally have its own SDS. A separate technical note may explain the mixed or cured system, but it should not replace the component SDS files.

Decision pointTell the preparer whether the product is one-part, two-part or supplied as a powder-plus-liquid kit. This affects document count and pricing.

What should the SDS contain?

The official OSHA SDS structure organises information into 16 sections. For construction chemicals, the most useful product-specific details usually appear in the following groups.

Does the SDS confirm transport status?

Section 14 records transport information based on the available classification. It should not invent a UN number from the words “construction chemical.” Solvent content, flash point, corrosivity, environmental hazards and package form can all affect the conclusion. Use the DG/Non-DG Classification service when a separate shipment decision is required.
