How do SDS and fertilizer product regulation in India differ?
The Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985 on India Code addresses fertilizer product regulation. An SDS serves a different purpose: it communicates chemical hazards, handling, emergency and transport information. Preparing an SDS does not itself register or approve a fertilizer under the applicable product rules.
What information is required?
- Exact fertilizer grade and nutrient declaration.
- Source salts and concentration ranges, not only total N-P-K values.
- Micronutrients, chelating agents, coatings, anti-caking agents and fillers.
- Powder, prill, granule, crystal or liquid physical form.

Why ammonium nitrate must not be assumed?
Only products that actually contain ammonium nitrate should be assessed against its specific storage and decomposition concerns. The EPA chemical advisory for solid ammonium nitrate focuses on safe storage, handling and contamination control. The OSHA fertilizer-industry guidance also separates ammonium nitrate and agricultural anhydrous ammonia from ordinary fertilizer products.
This does not justify placing explosive or oxidising language into every NPK or organic fertilizer SDS. The actual composition must lead the classification.
What should the fertilizer SDS contain?
The document should follow the official 16-section SDS format while remaining product-specific.
