Why should you first identify the paint system?

A paint SDS should describe the finished coating supplied to the customer. “Paint” can mean a water-based emulsion, solvent-borne enamel, two-component polyurethane, epoxy primer, powder coating or aerosol touch-up product. These systems do not share one hazard profile.

What information is needed for a paint SDS?

  • Complete finished formulation or concentration ranges.
  • Supplier SDS files for solvents, binders, hardeners, pigments and additives.
  • Technical data sheet, product label and intended application.
  • Water-based, solvent-based, powder, aerosol or multi-component format.
  • Reliable flash point, density, viscosity, pH and VOC-related information where relevant.
  • Package size and whether a hardener, thinner or catalyst is supplied separately.
  • Application method such as brush, roller, dipping or spray.

Why does application method matter?

The OSHA guidance on painting and coating hazards explains that fire and explosion risks can depend on flash point and volatility, while spraying can increase exposure to liquids, vapours and mists. This does not make every paint hazardous in the same way. It shows why the finished formula and intended application must be reviewed together.

For polyurethane coatings, the OSHA overview of isocyanates identifies possible irritation and respiratory effects from relevant isocyanate exposure. Those statements belong in a paint SDS only when the actual formulation contains the applicable ingredients.

Why do base, hardener and thinner need separate SDS documents?

A two-pack paint kit should not automatically receive one combined SDS. The base, curing agent and reducer may have different hazards, first-aid instructions and storage requirements before mixing. Each separately supplied component normally needs its own product identity and SDS.

What should the paint SDS contain?

The official OSHA Safety Data Sheet format sets out the recognised 16-section sequence.

Can the paint name determine a UN number?

No. Section 14 must be based on the finished formulation, flash point, corrosivity, environmental hazards, viscosity, packaging and applicable transport provisions. A raw solvent’s shipping description should not be copied into the finished paint SDS. Use DG/Non-DG Classification when a separate transport decision is required.
