Is the product a pure substance, blend or recovered solvent?

This is the first decision in solvent SDS preparation. A single identified substance can often be documented from reliable substance data. A proprietary thinner or cleaning blend needs ingredient ranges and finished-mixture properties. A recovered solvent may require additional evidence because its composition can vary.

What should be submitted?

  • Product name, grade and intended use.
  • Full composition or justified concentration ranges.
  • Supplier SDS files and technical specifications.
  • Purity, water content and stabiliser information for single substances.
  • Reliable flash point, boiling range, density and vapour-pressure data where relevant.
  • Package type, pack size and target market.
  • For recovered solvent, source and batch-quality information.

Why must Exposure information match the actual solvent?

The NIOSH guidance on organic solvent neurotoxicity recommends controlling workplace solvent exposure and describes a range of possible acute effects. This does not justify applying one health statement to every solvent. Exposure limits, skin notation and toxicological information must be selected for the actual ingredients.

The NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards provides substance-specific information for many workplace chemicals. A generic product name such as “industrial solvent” is not enough to choose the correct data.

Why is Flash point is important, but it different from the whole SDS?

Flash point can affect flammability and transport review, but solvent documentation may also need boiling range, vapour pressure, auto-ignition information, explosive limits, density, solubility and stability. The finished blend’s measured or reliably derived properties should be used rather than copying one ingredient’s values.

The UNECE GHS framework classifies physical, health and environmental hazards using defined criteria. The product should be assessed against those criteria rather than labelled hazardous or non-hazardous from its trade name.

What should the solvent SDS contain?

The official OSHA SDS structure sets out the familiar 16 sections.

Can the ingredient SDS determine the blend’s shipping entry?

Not automatically. The finished blend’s flash point, composition, hazard class, packing group criteria, package and applicable special provisions must be reviewed. A separate DG/Non-DG Classification may be needed when the shipping conclusion must be confirmed independently.
