Why does Hazards depend on how the product is supplied and applied?
Cementitious and mineral powders
Dust controls may be relevant for dry cementitious systems. The OSHA construction guidance for respirable crystalline silica explains that work involving silica-containing materials may require exposure controls. The SDS should only include silica-specific statements when the actual formulation and exposure conditions support them.
Polyurethane systems
The NIOSH information on isocyanates identifies irritation and sensitisation concerns for relevant isocyanate exposure. Those controls should not be copied into acrylic or cementitious products that do not contain those ingredients.
Epoxy systems
The NIOSH guidance on uncured epoxies and resins explains that uncured components may present hazards that differ from the cured material. A separately supplied resin and hardener therefore need their own pre-mixing SDS assessment.
Bituminous products
Hot-applied bitumen and cold-applied bituminous coatings should not be treated as the same product. The NIOSH guidance on hot-asphalt roofing exposure addresses fumes generated during hot application; it should not be used to invent fume hazards for a cold product without supporting conditions.
Why may one kit require more than one SDS?
A two-component waterproofing kit commonly contains a base and an activator, hardener or powder component. Before mixing, these are separate products with different compositions, first-aid measures and storage instructions. They normally require separate SDS files.
