Why does the exact engine-oil formulation matter?
Terms such as mineral, semi-synthetic, synthetic, petrol-engine oil, diesel-engine oil and multigrade help identify the commercial product, but they do not provide a complete hazard classification by themselves.

A viscosity grade alone is not enough to decide whether two oils can share one SDS. The underlying formulation and hazard conclusions must also remain sufficiently similar.
Why are New engine oil and used engine oil different from the same product?
The manufacturer’s SDS normally describes unused oil as supplied. Once oil has circulated through an engine, it may contain fuel dilution, soot, wear metals, combustion products, water or other contaminants that were not present in the original package.
The official EPA explanation of used oil defines it as petroleum-based or synthetic oil that has been used and contaminated by physical or chemical impurities. This supports an important documentation distinction: the new-product SDS should not be presented as a test report for drained engine oil.
In India, used oil may also fall under the separate Hazardous and Other Wastes regulatory framework listed by India Code. Waste handling and recycling obligations are different from preparing an SDS for a new engine-oil product.
What information is needed to prepare an Engine Oil SDS?

What is reviewed before preparing an engine-oil SDS?
Skin, eye and mist exposure
Routine handling can involve skin contact, spills and splashes. Some industrial or high-temperature applications may also generate oil mist. The NIOSH Pocket Guide entry for mineral-oil mist identifies inhalation and skin or eye contact as exposure routes and lists irritation of the eyes, skin and respiratory system as possible effects of mineral-oil mist exposure.
This does not mean every unopened engine oil receives the same hazard statement. The actual mixture, use conditions and available evidence must support the final conclusion.
Aspiration assessment
Hydrocarbon products should be assessed against the applicable aspiration-hazard criteria rather than classified from the word “oil.” The official OSHA health-hazard criteria for aspiration use composition and kinematic viscosity at 40°C when determining whether a hydrocarbon substance or mixture meets the criteria.
Fire and spill information
Flash point, thermal decomposition, incompatible materials and suitable extinguishing methods should be based on reliable product data. Spill guidance should consider slippery surfaces, drains, soil and water exposure without assuming that every grade has the same environmental classification.

Does every engine oil need a UN number?
No universal UN number applies to every engine oil. Transport information depends on the finished composition, physical properties, environmental classification, package and applicable mode of transport.
An SDS can support transport review, but it is not a shipping approval. The official PHMSA interpretation on SDS and transport classification confirms that a shipper must use the applicable transport criteria and remains responsible for the classification decision, even when an SDS contains transport information.
When a separate shipping conclusion is required, review the DG/Non-DG Classification service. Do not copy a transport entry from another oil grade or from one ingredient.
Can several viscosity grades share one SDS?
Possibly, but not simply because the labels belong to the same product family. The compositions, ingredient ranges, physical properties and hazard conclusions must remain suitable for every grade covered.
A separate review may be needed when there is a meaningful change in:
- Base-oil system or refining profile.
- Additive chemistry or concentration.
- Viscosity and aspiration-hazard assessment.
- Intended engine application.
- Environmental or transport classification.
- Supplier, responsible party or market-specific information.
