What makes lubricant hazards product-specific?
Base oil and additive chemistry
The final assessment depends on the refined base oil and additives such as anti-wear agents, corrosion inhibitors, detergents, dispersants or extreme-pressure components. An additive SDS cannot be copied directly into the finished lubricant SDS.
Mist and heated use
The NIOSH guidance for mineral-oil mist identifies inhalation and skin or eye contact as relevant exposure routes. The OSHA petroleum-refining technical guidance also advises avoiding skin contact with formulated lubricants and greases. These facts are relevant to workplace use, especially when oil is sprayed, heated or aerosolised.
New lubricant versus used oil
The SDS normally describes unused lubricant as supplied. The EPA definition of used oil recognises that oil may become contaminated by physical or chemical impurities during use. A drained or reclaimed oil therefore should not automatically use the new-product SDS.
What should the lubricant SDS contain?
The official OSHA SDS format organises information into 16 sections covering identity, hazards, composition, emergency response, handling, physical properties, toxicology and other information.
