The ECHA safety-data-sheet guidance explains that an SDS communicates properties, hazards, handling, disposal, transport, first aid and exposure-control measures. It should not be replaced by a generic lubricant sheet.
How are grease hazards and exposure reviewed?
Finished grease is commonly handled as a paste or semi-solid, but exposure can change when it is heated, pumped at pressure, sprayed or used in a process that forms mist. Ingredient-specific skin, eye, inhalation and environmental effects must also be considered.
The NIOSH Pocket Guide entry for mineral-oil mist identifies inhalation and skin or eye contact as exposure routes for mineral-oil mist. That information is relevant when a process can generate mist; it should not be copied into every grease SDS as though ordinary manual application creates the same exposure.
NLGI grade, dropping point and load-test results help users select a grease, but the SDS classification must come from chemical composition and reliable product evidence.
Can the new-product SDS describe used grease?
The SDS covers grease as supplied. Grease removed from machinery may contain metal particles, process chemicals, degradation products or contamination that were not present in the original product.
Use the supplier SDS as background information, but do not assume it fully characterises waste grease from every machine or process.

Is lubricating grease automatically non-dangerous?
No universal conclusion should be made from the word “grease.” Many products may not meet dangerous-goods criteria, but certain ingredients or environmental classifications can change the result.
Section 14 should state the conclusion supported by the exact formulation and route. Use DG/Non-DG Classification when a separate transport opinion is required.
