Why do new gear oil and drained gear oil need different safety information?
The manufacturer’s SDS describes unused product. After service, the oil may contain wear metals, water, process residues or other contaminants. The EPA definition of used oil explains that used petroleum or synthetic oil has been contaminated by physical or chemical impurities during use.

What hazards are reviewed?
Skin contact, eye contact, spill conditions, heated use and possible mist generation are reviewed against the actual product. That does not mean every unopened gear oil receives the same hazard classification.
