“Lavender oil,” “lemon oil” or “eucalyptus oil” is not enough information for a defensible SDS. Natural oils are complex mixtures, and the composition may vary with botanical species, plant part, geographical origin, extraction method, season, processing and standardisation. A commercial product may also contain another essential oil, a fragrance compound, an antioxidant or a carrier oil.

An SDS should identify the product that is actually supplied. It should not copy the composition and hazards of another supplier’s oil simply because both products share a common name.
What Safety Points Are Reviewed for Essential Oils?
No single hazard statement applies to all essential oils. The review should follow the composition and available evidence for the submitted material.
Skin sensitisation and irritation
Some essential oils or their constituents may be associated with skin sensitisation or irritation. The European Commission’s scientific review identifies numerous natural extracts, including essential oils, as established contact allergens. The classification of the supplied oil still depends on its own composition and applicable concentration rules.
Oxidation during storage
Constituents such as limonene and linalool can form more sensitising oxidation products after air exposure. This makes storage conditions, container closure, age and available stabilisation information relevant when preparing handling and storage guidance. The SDS should not claim that every essential oil oxidises at the same rate.
Flammability and fire response
Many oils are combustible liquids, but their flash points are not identical. Section 5 and Section 9 should rely on a product-specific value or credible supplier data instead of assigning a flammable-liquid category from the words “essential oil.”
Aspiration and environmental hazards
Some constituent profiles may support aspiration or aquatic-hazard classifications. These conclusions must be calculated or supported using the relevant ingredient and mixture data; they should not be added as default statements.

A complete SDS uses a 16-section sequence. OSHA’s Appendix D is one widely recognised reference for the headings and minimum information, while the final classification and regulatory wording must suit the intended market.

Can One SDS Cover Several Essential Oils or Variants?
One SDS should not automatically cover several oils because they use the same packaging or brand. A peppermint oil, lavender oil and tea tree oil are different materials. Even two products sold as the same oil may need separate review when one is pure and the other is diluted, standardised or blended.
A grouped SDS may be considered only when the materials are substantially similar in composition and hazards and the chosen concentration ranges accurately cover them. OSHA also recognises that one SDS may cover complex mixtures with similar hazards and essentially the same ingredients. That principle should not be stretched to unrelated botanical oils.
How Is Transport Information Determined?
An essential oil does not receive a UN number merely because it is aromatic or natural. Section 14 depends on the material’s properties, composition, environmental classification, packaging and mode of transport.
- A flash-point result may be relevant to a flammable-liquid assessment.
- Composition may affect environmental-hazard and proper-shipping-name decisions.
- Pack size and transport mode may affect how a shipment is prepared, even when the underlying classification is unchanged.
- The SDS provides transport information; the carrier or competent party still applies its own shipment-acceptance checks.
